Monthly Recommendations: Not Another Love Story

Monthly Recommendations is a monthly meme created by Kayla Rayne and Trina. Each month is a different topic; please swing by the Goodreads group and check it out.

It is possible to have too much of a good thing. When February rolls around, there's love in the air and Valentine's Day takes over everything.

This list is a few recommendations I have if you'd rather not be bogged down by romances or if you simply need a break from that lovey dovey stuff (not that there's anything wrong with that...sometimes).

1. The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde

Literature. A detective that can go into and out of books. Thursday Next is my kind of girl.

2. xXxholic by CLAMP

There is a slight crush going on in the series, but no huge love themes that I remember. It's an eerie series full of magic, supernatural elements, and some really good lessons (lying is a bad habit, Internet addiction, etc.).

3. The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

I don't remember if there's love in this book besides that of a father and son, but I don't think so. It's a gorgeous book that goes between black and white drawings and great prose sections.

4. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

It's got mystery and crazy people and a reclusive author and just all sorts of insanity that make it a worthy read. Any love that might be in here is not the lovey kind you'd expect of Valentine's. It is warped and amazingly nuts.

  1. OHMYGOD. *dashes about adding books to her TBR* I most definitely need to read ALL of these. I don't mind romance in books, but it can get rather tiring at times; all the more reason I'll love reading these. I'm especially curious about the Eyre Affair - a detective who can move in and out of books? Yes please. Lovely list <3

  2. I'm glad you liked this post. :) The Eyre Affair (as well as the rest of Thursday's adventures) are some of my favorite books. The traveling between books doesn't happen as much in the first book, but that it where it all begins.

Wait until some of the later books. Her life is one crazy loop the loop!
